Nyepi: What Bali's Day of Silence Means for Your Trip

By Kadek Putri, Gianyar 5 min read
Quiet Balinese temple offerings around Nyepi, Bali's day of silence

Nyepi is the Balinese New Year and a full day of silence: no tours, no traffic, no flights in or out, and lights kept low after dark. If your trip overlaps Nyepi, plan to stay in your hotel for the day — it is a unique, peaceful experience, but every tour and the airport pause for 24 hours.

The days around Nyepi are wonderful to witness. The night before, villages parade huge Ogoh-Ogoh monster effigies before burning them to drive away bad spirits. We are happy to plan tours right up to the day before and resume the day after; just tell us your dates and we will work around the silence.

Nyepi moves each year with the Balinese calendar (it falls in March or sometimes late, near the spring equinox). Check the exact date when you book flights, and ask us on WhatsApp — we will confirm which of your days are affected and suggest the best tour schedule around it.
